Join Kaykima for a Father and Son/Daughter afternoon of firecraft and enjoying the great outdoors!

In the majority of tradtional civilizations men played an important role in hunting, gathering, scouting, and defending. Firecraft was an essential skill and  played a crucial role in the role of men on the land. This workshop will aim to reconnect us to the art of fire as well as to spend quality time.

The Art of Firecraft

Fire has been an essential part of human history, not only in a survival sense but also has played a major role culturally and spiritually. Fire has also helped shaped and continues to shape the world we live in.

This workshop will focus on diving deep and exploring the art and science of Firecraft as well as deepening our relationship and appreciation of fire. We will cover the social, cultural and ecological importance of fire, the science behind what fire is and what it needs, traditional modern sources of ignition, and fire building and maintenance. Participants will practice various methods of firecraft from friction fires to rock and steel methods. We will also look closely at foraging natural sources of tinder, kindling, and fuel that are available to Western Canada as well as cover a number of approaches to support fire making in all seasons and weather.

Participants will be able to take home a fire kit with some firecraft essentials including the char-cloth they make for their next fires.
