South Alberta Family Camp Out Weekend
June 21 -22 2005 Willow Creek Provincial Recreation Area
Join Kaykima for the 3rd Annual Family Camp Out. These two days are a cost effective and fun way to learn and practice skills in a wilderness setting. This weekend will be mainly focused on Wilderness Living skills such as carving, cooking and Wilderness medicines however we will still touch on the basics such as cutting tool safety and firecraft. These camp outs are geared towards families with all levels of experience in the wilderness.
First time or occasional campers are welcome as the weekend is a safe and fun way to experience maybe your first time wild camping but surrounded by other families and those with experience!
Participants are welcome to bring out their trailer, rv, or tent to the site for the weekend. As Willow Creek is a designated Crown Land wild camping spot we cannot reserve spots a head of time. It is recommended that, if possible, families arrive on Friday to ensure they have a spot close to the teaching area. The road in is gravel but is passable by standard height cars and trucks.
Please note that as this is on Crown Land a Public Land camping pass is required to prevent any possible fines. You can get one here: https://www.alberta.ca/public-lands-camping-pass
What to Bring
There will be a general list that you will receive when you register that will go over the basics. However in addition please bring:
- clothes that can get paint or stain on them (for walking sticks)
- any old pairs of jeans or thicker all cotton material (flannel, sweatshirts etc) that can be cut up for charcloth. I will supply if you don't have any.
- Ideally something that can be cooked on a fire for Lunch on Sunday as each family will be making their own cooking fire.
- We will be making Bannock as part of the cooking class. Bannock contains white flour, baking soda, sugar, salt and cooking oil/fat. If there are any allergy concerns please bring your own mix to camp. There are many resources online but contact me if you are needing any assistance.
