Knife & Axe Use and Safety

This class builds confidence with essential tools while emphasizing awareness, respect, and safety.

Build Your Own Survival Kit
What should you actually carry in a survival kit? In this hands-on session we’ll look at practical items that can help keep you safe and comfortable outdoors. Participants will learn how to assemble a simple, reliable kit that can come along on your next hike, camping trip, or backcountry adventure.

June 22

Char Cloth & Percussive Fire Starting
Discover traditional fire-starting techniques using char cloth, rock, and steel. You’ll learn how char cloth is made, why it works so well for catching a spark, and how to build a flame from a single strike. A rewarding introduction to a traditional skill that connects you to the roots of firecraft. Youth will be able to take home the char cloth they make and add it to their survival kits and be prepared for their next fire.

June 23

Mushroom & Plant Identification
An introduction to some of the common edible, medicinal, and useful plants and fungi found in Alberta. We’ll explore how to observe key identifying features, discuss ethical foraging practices, and look at a few of the mushrooms that appear during the Alberta spring season.

Additional Information:

Please wear weather appropriate clothing. A good rule is to dress for colder than what the forecast is calling for. This includes sturdy, closed toe footwear and appropriate gear for rain or snow.

Pack along plenty to drink and a couple of snacks.

Youth are welcome to bring a knife if it is FIXED BLADE (non-folding) otherwise all tools and materials are provided. Youth can use cutting tools only after knife safety instruction.

These classes are drop off or parented. You know your child the best, however if you are dropping off please connect with Rob directly before the class.

Parents and siblings under 6 years old are welcome to hang out and observe.
