This one day workshop is a great way to both practice and learn new wilderness survival skills close to home and meet new friends!
Schedule
10-12pm
BASIC WILDERNESS SURVIVAL - In this introductory class we explore what to do if we find ourselves lost and steps that we can take to get found. We discuss the psychological aspects of survival and brainstorm how we can stay calm and focused when faced with stressors and difficult emotions. This is followed by building effective emergency shelters that use all natural materials found in the area. Before the end of class we evaluate what we built and reflect on its effectiveness.
1-4pm
PLANT ID - Join Kaykima for an immersive Fall Foraging Class where you'll reconnect with the land and learn to identify the edible, medicinal, and practical gifts nature offers during the autumn season. Fall is a great time to harvest berries at their sweetest and to track down some late summer mushrooms! Whether you're a beginner or have experience in the wild, this class offers a rich, hands-on opportunity to deepen your understanding of the natural world around you.
Please wear long pants as we will most likely go off trail. Feel free to bring any berries or mushrooms to class that we can identify as well!
FIRE CRAFT - We start this class off with a look at why fire is essential for a long term survival situation. We cover the science behind fire and the hallmarks of an effective fire. This is followed by using primitive methods of fire starting. This flows well into the next class where we will be learning about fire maintenance and “the right fire for the right job”.
